Acupuncture provides many healing powers for the mind and body, but some of these benefits go beyond improving aches and pains—they can aid in rejuvenating one’s life. A new study has found that this ancient medical practice revives patients who have been in a coma. These findings are significant in the study of acupuncture and the healing process of coma patients worldwide.
The study, titled “Clinical efficacy observation of acupuncture at suliao (GV 25) on improving regain of consciousness from coma in severe craniocerebral injury,” was performed by Chinese researchers in June 2014. Their objective was “to compare the clinical therapeutic effects differences between acupuncture at Suliao (GV 25) and Shuigou (GV 26) on promoting regain of consciousness from coma in severe craniocerebral injury.”
In acupuncture, there are hundreds of pressure points that affect different parts of the body when pinpointed. This study focused specifically on two of these points, Governing Vessel (GV) 25 and 26, which are located on the tip of the nose and between the nose and top lip. GV26 is notable within Traditional Chinese Medicine for its association with mental health, seizures, epilepsy, and coma. GV25 (tip of nose) is associated with consciousness and shock.
Researchers studied 82 patients who were under stable condition from craniocerebral injury. They divided these patients into a control group of 40 cases and observation group of 42 cases. Acupuncture with strong needle manipulation was administered to both groups for 90 days with the only difference in which pressure point was targeted.
The study found that the effect of acupuncture through GV25 in order to regain consciousness from coma in craniocerebral injury is positive because of its ability to improve sneezing reflex and stimulate respiratory center. Acupuncture through GV26 was also positive, but took longer to revive patients.
